..to having a budget-friendly & bountiful Thanksgiving is make from scratch anything that you can. It will more than likely be cheaper! For instance, I wanted to purchase pre-made pie crusts but even after coupons and sales I still could not justify paying what it costs. So, I am going to make my own pie crust and that will easily save me $3-5 dollars. Again, it doesn’t sound like much but it does add up!
If you don’t have your own pie crust recipe, here is the recipe I use for no-fail pie crusts every time:
2 Cups Flour
1 tsp. Salt
1 Cup Shortening (butter flavor is great)
1/2 Cup Cold Water
Combine flour & salt. Cut in shortening with fork or pastry blender until mixture resembles course crumbs. Stir in water until mixture forms a ball. Divide dough in half and shape into balls. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate until firm. Roll on floured surface. Makes 2 pie crusts. Rolls out well.
Other items to make from scratch while saving money are gravies, stock, breadcrumbs, and whipping cream. There is a major BONUS to making anything you can from scratch: It will taste better. Guaranteed!
